Non-Point Source Data Analyst / Faculty Extension Assistant

This position will work in partnership with the U.S. EPA Chesapeake Bay Program Office staff to assist the regional Chesapeake Bay Program partnership in the analysis and understanding of the effect that agricultural and non-point source practices and management actions have on water quality and living resources. These responses are critical to defining the success of the Chesapeake Bay restoration efforts and directing future policies and actions. The incumbent will serve as technical staff to the Chesapeake Bay Program committees, teams and workgroups by evaluating agricultural and environmental nonpoint source modeling information and processes. This includes the development and management of databases used in the Chesapeake Bay Program Watershed Model input decks as well as in-depth analyses, interpretation and dissemination of model inputs and outputs. The incumbent will collaborate with technicians, agricultural and environmental managers in refining simulation processes and data to better reflect real-world conditions and pollution control activities. The major focus of the work will be to provide guidance to policy makers, managers, researchers and citizens involved in the restoration and protection of water quality and living resources within the Chesapeake Bay watershed.

Two-Year Term Contract Position
Chesapeake Bay Restoration Coordinator
The National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) is currently looking for a Chesapeake Bay Restoration Coordinator who will serve as NFWF´s regional field person to assist with ensuring the success of grant investments made to support the restoration and protection of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries. This two-year contract position will be expected to spend approximately half of their time in the field and travelling throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed. The position´s permanent duty station may be in Annapolis, MD or another central location, subject to negotiation. The position´s immediate point of contact at NFWF will be Amanda Bassow, Program Director, Chesapeake Programs.
Major Duties
- Conduct outreach and offer assistance to potential grantees in targeted watersheds to understand NFWF funding priorities, develop restoration project concepts, identify potential partnerships, and identify funding opportunities.
- Conduct post-award site visits for all grantees to trouble shoot potential challenges with project implementation; conduct pre-project monitoring assessments; and collect photo documentation.
- Conduct site visits at the completion grants to conduct post-project monitoring assessments; collect photo documentation; provide guidance regarding projects´ long-term maintenance plans; and, to scope potential next phases of projects with grantees.
Other Duties
- Organize site visits to successful projects for other NFWF staff, funding partners, and key policy makers.
- Network with Chesapeake Bay Program staff and other partners in the Chesapeake restoration effort to identify partnership opportunities for CBSF grantees.
- Facilitate peer-to-peer learning among grantees through field tours, site visits, workshops and other venues.
- Organize opportunities for grantees to co-present projects at venues such as the Chesapeake Watershed Forum, the Choose Clean Water Coalition Conference, and CBSF grantee roundtable events.
Applicants should have a strong background and knowledge of stream and riparian buffer restoration, significant on the ground field experience, familiarity with other restoration techniques, experience with water quality and benthic monitoring, strong communication skills, and experience interacting with the government agencies, non-profit organizations, and private entities engaged in restoration activities, particularly those providing assistance to private landowners. Applicants also should have a knowledge of the complexities of the Chesapeake Bay Program and its restoration partnership.

Virginia State Parks AmeriCorps Interpretive Program
AmeriCorps members will serve as park interpreters at state parks across Virginia from April to Sept. 2012. Landowner Advisor for Non-operator Landowners
Description:
Potomac Conservancy is seeking a contractor to fill the role of a Landowner Advisor for Non-operator Landowners (Advisor). The Conservancy has secured a two-year grant to engage agricultural landowners who own, but do not operate, their land in conservation activities. The Advisor will be charged with implementing an outreach and engagement campaign centered on the Monocacy, Catoctin and Antietam watersheds in portions of Frederick, Washington and Carroll counties of Maryland. The Advisor will serve as the main point of contact for landowners and as a liaison between the landowners and various technical resources in Maryland such as the Natural Resource Conservation Service and the Soil Conservation Districts. He/she may also help facilitate communication on conservation matters between the landowner and their farm operator. FACULTY ADVISOR POSITION
George Mason University and the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment (WYSE) seek several dynamic and enthusiastic individuals to fill the positions of Faculty Advisor for a week-long residential student leadership conference held June 24-June 29, 2012. WYSE brings together 250 of the nations’ brightest rising high school juniors and senior (rising sophomores and juniors) for an experiential and intensive conference focusing on leadership and environmental science and conservation. The students will reside on the Fairfax campus of George Mason University, while taking advantage of Washington, D.C. and venues such as the National Geographic Society, the Smithsonian National Zoo, and the U.S. Capitol. Job Description:
The Faculty Advisor will be responsible for providing students with the best possible conference experience. Each Advisor will be assigned to a group of no more than 25 students and will facilitate the assigned curriculum and discussion topics. The Faculty Advisor must be able and willing to interact in a large group setting and is responsible for the student’s safety and well being at all times during the conference. Faculty Advisors reside in on- campus single room accommodations for the duration of the conference.

- Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree
- Must be 21 years of age
- Ability to carry out the responsibilities listed above
- Interest in and knowledge of environmental science/conservation studies/sustainability efforts
